Act I Scene 1

Popova's living room. Popova, dressed completely in black sits staring at a photograph. Luka, her old servant, tries to talk sense to her.
(Enter Luka; he's upset.)

Luka Missus, there's someone wants to see you. Says it can't wait.

Popova Didn't you tell him that my husband is dead and that I see no one?

Luka I did, but he doesn't want to listen, says it's very important.

Popova And I said I see no one!

Luka That's what I told him, but he's... he's kind of a wild man— he started shouting and pushed his way into the house. He's in the dining room right now.

Popova All right, all right, tell him all right. Really! The nerve of some people!

(Luka goes out.)
